Meet Lina

Robofun - Melbourne

I’m lucky – when I joined Global Sisters, I wasn’t struggling for money and I wasn’t a single mum. I see so many situations among the Sisters that are difficult and yet still they have this passion to work and strength to move forwards. They inspire me a lot – and I hope I inspire others, too.

I’m Palestinian but was living in Jordan before I came to Australia. I had no local work experience and was on a temporary visa. It was so difficult to find a job. I studied computer and information systems in Jordan and so I started volunteering in robotic and coding competitions here. I had a chance to be a judge in one competition and that gave me hope, even if there was no income.

I wanted to be financially independent. I just kept thinking of what I could do and how I could use my knowledge positively. I noticed a lack of females in robotics and coding competitions and I thought, ‘Why don’t I use my knowledge to encourage girls into STEM fields?’ I created a business that gives robotics and coding 3D design workshops to kids and flexible employment to qualified mums. I’m sometimes asked why we don’t do girls’-only workshops, and I tell them that children need to be prepared for real life, where men and women work together. Let them engage in all aspects of these fields.
